The Lazy Installer's Trick for a Perfectly Straight Stair Runner.
If you’re DIYing your stairs, the biggest fear isn’t the staples—it’s the math. I’ve seen a thousand home jobs, and 900 of them have the same problem: the runner starts drifting an inch to the left by the third stair.
If you want the full start-to-finish manual, click here but if you just want to make sure your runner doesn't drift, keep reading.
Most people try to be a math genius with a measuring tape on every single tread. Stop doing that.
1. The "No-Measure" Template
At the 1:41 mark in the video, I show you how to use a scrap piece of underpad as a spacer.
- The Secret: Once you center your first stair, cut a scrap piece to the exact width of that side gap (usually 5 or 6 inches).
- The Move: On every stair after that, just butt that spacer against the stringer, slide your runner against it, and staple. You'll stay dead-center without picking up a tape measure once.
2. The "Wiggle" (How to hide staples)
Don't just fire the gun into the carpet. You’ll trap the "pile" (the fluff) and get an ugly dent that looks like a total amateur job.
- Pro Tip: Wiggle the nose of the stapler into the fibers until you feel it hit the backing.
- The Result: The staple hides under the fluff. Rub it with your hand, and it disappears.
3. Sound Matters
If you don't hear a solid "thud," that runner isn't safe. Use a hammer or a heavy tucker to bang those staples in deep. Pro Tip: You can even counter-sink your staples using the head of your stair tucker!
Installer’s Headache Tip: If you hit a squeaky board while you're doing this, drive a 2-inch screw into the joist before the runner goes down, or you'll hear that squeak for the next 10 years.
Tools Used In This Video

- The Powerhouse: Roberts Electric Staple Gun
- For Sharp Creases: Roberts Carpet Tucker
- The Tension Maker: Roberts Economy Kicker
- Pro Knife: Roberts Carpet Knife
- Stay Loaded: Electric Gun Staples
