How to Measure for a Stair Runner (Pro Installerโ€™s Guide)

Hi, Iโ€™m Keith Shannon from DirectCarpet.com. Iโ€™ve personally installed over 1,000 stair runners across North America over the past 25 years. Iโ€™ve measured and installed on straight runs, boxed steps, landings, winders, and tricky turns. This guide shows my proven process to get a perfect fit the first time.

Note: This quick estimator assumes a typical 18โ€ณ per step (tread + riser). Length is rounded up to the nearest foot. Add full landing lengths separately. For advanced cases (landings, turns, winders), use the full calculator.

What Youโ€™ll Need

  • ๐Ÿ“ Tape measure
  • โœ๏ธ Pencil + notepad (or phone)
  • ๐Ÿ“ Optional: small square/ruler

Stepโ€‘byโ€‘Step Measuring

  1. Choose your width. Most homes look best at 27โ€“32 inches. Narrow stairs or tight spindles may require less; wide, grand stairs can take more.
  2. Count your steps. Include every tread and riser, plus any landings or winders.
  3. Measure one step run. Tread depth + riser height (include nosing). Take several measurements and use the largest.
  4. Include landings and turns. Measure each landing length and any turns.
  5. Add side reveals. Keep 3โ€“5 inches visible on each side for balance.
  6. Calculate total length. (Tread + riser) ร— steps + landings + extra for finishing. (Or use the full calculator.)

Pro Tips from 25+ Years in the Field

  • โœ… Measure twice, cut once. Doubleโ€‘check every measurement before ordering.
  • โœ… Allow extra length for all stair runners. This ensures proper fitting and adjustments.
  • โœ… Top riser finishing. Add 6โ€“8 inches so your last step finishes cleanly.
  • โœ… Mind the spindles. Measure between them to ensure your chosen width fits comfortably.

FAQ

๐Ÿ“ What width should I choose?

In most homes, 27โ€“32 inches looks balanced. Aim for a 3โ€“5 inch reveal on each side and verify spindle/newel clearance. If youโ€™re unsure, run the calculator with your measurements.

โ†ฉ๏ธ How do I measure landings and turns?

Measure the full landing length and include the next tread/riser sequence after each turn. For 90ยฐ turns, add the landing + the first step after the turn; for 180ยฐ returns, include both landings and the steps between.

๐Ÿ” What if my steps vary in size?

Thatโ€™s common. Take measurements on a few different steps and use the largest tread+riser value so your runner never comes up short. We can also accommodate custom sizingโ€”just mention your measurements when ordering and weโ€™ll build it to fit.
